RESTful WHOIS is a REST-based version of Punktum dk’s WHOIS lookup service. The service makes it possible to retrieve structured data about .dk domain names and related information in JSON format.
The full technical specification for RESTful WHOIS is available on Punktum dk’s GitHub.
What is RESTful WHOIS?
WHOIS is used to look up registration data about domain names. The traditional WHOIS protocol typically returns text-based responses, which can be difficult to process automatically.
RESTful WHOIS has been developed as a structured alternative. The service returns data in JSON format, making the information easier to use in integrated systems, support tools, and administrative workflows.
Why is RESTful WHOIS relevant?
RESTful WHOIS makes it easier to retrieve and process lookup data programmatically. This is useful when systems need to display or verify information about .dk domain names without having to parse text-based WHOIS responses.
The service complements EPP by providing access to read-only lookups. While EPP is used to perform actions, RESTful WHOIS can be used to retrieve structured information.
What can RESTful WHOIS be used for?
RESTful WHOIS can be used for lookups that form part of systems and workflows. This includes:
- looking up .dk domain names
- displaying public domain status
- looking up expiry and deletion dates where available
- looking up associated name servers
- looking up registrant information where available
- looking up registrar information where available
- supporting customer service and administration systems
RESTful WHOIS is used for read-only lookups. Registration, changes, and other administration of .dk domain names are handled through other services, such as EPP.
